The large size of polymeric water repellent coatings seal the pores of the substrate. Liquid water is kept out, but water vapor generated from within remains trapped, causing more damage. In addition, the surface coating is subject to degradation by UV radiated, eventually breaking down the coating and allowing water to penetrate once again.
