Protectosil® Graffiti Control
Technical Data
Hints about testing your substrate.
The best way to determine how Protectosil ANTIGRAFFITI® will work on your building material is to do a test patch. This is best done on a sample of the material. The test patch will help to provide you with information about application, product consumption and graffiti removal methods that are specific to your substrate.
Samples in slab form are best since you can test various paints and markers simultaneously.
Based on our experience the slab should be at least 20 cm (8 inches) long.
Spray Protectosil ANTIGRAFFITI® onto the test object just as would be done in the field. If you can’t spray the test area with the same equipment as you intend to use on the structure, then the information you get about product consumption and surface conditions will not be representative of the entire structure.
The hydrophobic effect is apparent within a few minutes of application once drying has begun. This is dependent on both the substrate and weather conditions.
Once the first application is dry to the touch the second one can be applied. The beads of product that form should be rubbed in with a brush or swab to ensure uniform distribution. In general dense substrates require two applications, while porous, absorbent substrates may require three or more. The amount of Protectosil ANTIGRAFFITI® required is on average 150 g/m2 but this is again depent on the substrate.
For polished stone surfaces and glazed tiles, small amounts of Protectosil ANTIGRAFFITI® are applied to the surface and polished in with a soft cloth or sponge. In this case average product consumption is around 10 – 20 ml/m2.
Note: some substrates (especially sandstone) require longer reaction times in order for the antigraffiti effect to establish. If the antigraffiti effect is insufficient try waiting several days first. If still not satisfactory another treatment with Protectosil ANTIGRAFFITI® will usually suffice.
In order to minimize darkening of certain building materials we recommend treating these with a suitable primer before applying Protectosil ANTIGRAFFITI®.
